Kenya offers a huge variety of schools with excellent standards both in the major cities, Nairobi and Mombasa, as well as boarding schools in the countryside. Some of the private schools in Nairobi are considered to be the best in the entire East African region and often parents located in remote areas send their children to these schools.
There are three general types of secondary schools in Kenya. Harambee schools (coined by Kenya's first president Jomo Kenyatta meaning "pulling together" in Swahili as a general slogan for the country) that make up 75% of the schools and are less selective and less competitive. Then there are government sponsored schools where rather stringent selection is based on a pupil's score in an examination called Kenya Certification of Primary Education (KCPE) and these are always boarding schools. Lastly there are numerous private schools that follow the British A-level and O-level system, the IB system or the American high school system and these schools cater to the middle and upper class and the expatriate community due to the school fees.
Numerous private schools are affiliated with religion like The Aga Khan Academy for the Ismaili Muslims, the Rift Valley Academy and St Mary's for Christians, the Oshwal Academy for the Asian Jains and so forth. Other British schools modelled after the British Public Schools or International Schools like Hillcrest Secondary School, Brookhouse School, Braeburn School and The International School of Kenya enjoy a very good reputation not only in Kenya but worldwide.
