LAMU ISLAND is one of three larger islands that form the Lamu archipelago, situated 320 kms north of Mombasa. Lamu town is a World Heritage Site and of historical significance. The island is linked to the mainland by a ferry from Mokowe where there is also an airstrip with regular flights to Nairobi, Mombasa and Malindi. There are no cars on Lamu, transport is carried out with the help of donkeys. Lamu has a unique Arabic Swahili coastal character and is a favourite destination for visitors. Arabic-style houses dominate the main town with their whitewashed walls and flat roofs. Shela, a village 2 miles from Lamu town, is now the main attraction for tourism due to its beautiful unspoilt beaches. Lamu has hotels, guest houses and cottages to rent.
