There are numerous excellent hospitals in Kenya staffed by highly professional medical personal offering a very wide range of services. The very first hospital in Kenya, the Native Civil Hospital, was established in 1901 and is today called the Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya's largest national hospital. The Aga Khan Hospital is part of the Aga Khan Health Services and there are three hospitals in the country - Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu respectively. The Nairobi Hospital, founded in 1954, is one of the best and most important hospitals in the entire East African region with a multitude of facilities. Other private hospitals in Nairobi include The Karen Hospital and The Mater Hospital. Gertrude's Children's Hospital, located in Nairobi's suburb, Muthaiga, is highly regarded throughout Kenya for its excellent pediatricians.The coastal region of Kenya is served by the Mombasa Hospital and St. Luke's Hospital, both of importance for Mombasa and the entire coastal strip north and south of Mombasa island. Outside of Nairobi there is The Kijabe Missionary Hospital located on the escarpment leading down into the Great Rift Valley and Diani Beach Hospital, located on the South Coast catering to local residents and tourists alike. Kisumu has the Kima Mission Hospital and the Masemo Hospital.
